The Stress Free Guide: De-Cluttering Your Late Parent’s Home

Steps to help make organizing, selling and what to keep easier.

Losing a parent is extremely emotionally taxing. Adding the stress of going through your late parent’s home and preparing for an estate sale, move or downsizing might seem like more than you can handle.  We’ve laid out a few tips on making the de-cluttering process an easy and smooth transition.

1. Tackle one room at a time
Rather than overwhelming yourself by trying to fix something in every room all at once, pick one room to start. Don’t move to any other portion of the house until you’ve completed that room. Something like this can make seemingly daunting tasks seem much more manageable.

2. Discard the easy items first
Whatever room you decide to work in first, go through it and get rid of all the obvious “throw away” items like old undergarments, Q-tips, medications, etc. This will give you the appearance of progress and keep you motivated when it comes to the harder items that may take a bit more thought.

3. Make a list of things you want to keep and set those items aside
In each room, decide right away what you want to keep. Whether they are family heirlooms, childhood mementos, or personal affects, make sure you get everything you want. Putting these aside from the beginning will make things much easier when it comes time for your estate sale. Going along with this, once you’ve made a decision about an item, stick with it.

4. Clearly label boxes for sorting
If you’ve got “keep,” “donate,” “sell,” and “toss” piles, make sure they are clearly labeled. Hopefully, this will prevent a precious keepsake getting thrown in the sell pile, or donating items better suited for an estate sale.

5. Get some help
If you have siblings, a significant other, or close friend or relative who can help you, consider asking for help to save time. Delegate items of less personal significance to them so you can really get down to business.

6. Call Stress Free Estates to help get an estate sale underway
